When You Run Out of Words, Heaven Doesn’t
1. The Holy Spirit Helps Us Pray
Romans 8:26–27
We do not always know what to pray.
The Holy Spirit helps our weakness.
He intercedes according to the will of God.
We can pray with confidence because He knows the Father’s heart.
2. Praying in Tongues
1 Corinthians 14:2, 4, 14–15
When I pray in tongues, I am speaking to God.
My spirit is praying.
I speak mysteries in the Spirit.
I am edified (built up).
My understanding may be unfruitful, but my spirit is communicating with God.
3. Intercession
1 Timothy 2:1; Romans 8:26–27
Believers are called to intercede for others.
The Holy Spirit intercedes within us.
Jesus continually intercedes for us before the Father.
4. Interpretation of Tongues
1 Corinthians 12:10; 14:5, 13, 27–28
Interpretation is a spiritual gift.
It is not a word-for-word translation but a Spirit-given understanding of the message.
Its purpose is to edify the church.
5. Prophecy
1 Corinthians 14:3
Prophecy speaks directly to people.
It brings:
Edification
Exhortation
Comfort
6. God’s Order in the Church
1 Corinthians 14:26, 33, 40
Spiritual gifts are for building up the church.
God is not the author of confusion.
Everything should be done decently and in order.
Important Clarifications
Not every tongue spoken in Scripture requires interpretation. Personal prayer to God (1 Corinthians 14:2) is different from a public message to the congregation (1 Corinthians 14:27–28).
Interpretation is needed for a public message in tongues so the church is edified.
The Bible never explicitly says, “The devil cannot understand tongues.” It’s better to teach what Scripture clearly says: tongues are spoken to God, and in the Spirit we speak mysteries (1 Corinthians 14:2).
A Closing Summary
The Holy Spirit helps us pray. He intercedes when we don’t know what to pray. When we pray in tongues, we speak to God and our spirit is built up. When God gives a public message in tongues, He also provides interpretation so the church is edified. Prophecy speaks directly to people for edification, exhortation, and comfort. In everything, the Holy Spirit glorifies Christ and builds up the body of Christ in love and order.
